Objective

The goal is to capture your opponent’s Flag by moving one of your pieces onto the enemy Flag tile. Unlike chess, the power of each piece is hidden — the game is about bluffing, trapping, and information.

Setup

  1. Each player places their pieces on their own side of the board during the setup phase.
  2. Pieces are placed face-down / hidden from the opponent.
  3. You can arrange pieces however you like — protect your Flag and prepare attacks.
  4. When both players finish setup, the match begins.
Tip: Put strong ranks near the center, but don’t make it obvious where your Flag is.

Turns & Movement

Players take turns moving one piece per turn.

  • Move 1 square at a time.
  • Movement is up, down, left, right (no diagonals).
  • You cannot move onto a tile occupied by your own piece.
  • Moving onto an enemy piece triggers a battle.

Battle Rules

A battle happens when you move your piece onto an opponent’s occupied square. Both piece ranks are revealed and compared.

  • Higher rank wins and stays on the tile.
  • Lower rank is removed from the board.
  • If both ranks are equal, both pieces are removed.
  • Flag cannot attack. If a piece attacks a Flag, the attacker captures it and wins.
Important: The Spy has a special rule (see “Ranks & Power”).

Ranks & Power

Most pieces follow a simple rule: higher rank defeats lower rank. However, some ranks have special interactions depending on the ruleset you’re using.

Piece
General Behavior
Flag
Cannot move/attack in most rulesets; capturing it ends the game.
Spy
Special counter piece. Common rule: can defeat the highest rank if used correctly.
High Officers
Stronger ranks that defeat lower ranks.
Lower Soldiers
Weaker, but useful for scouting, baiting, and blocking.
Developer Note: Your app can show the exact rank ladder in “Rankings” later. This How-To focuses on core gameplay that always applies.

How to Win

  • Capture the enemy Flag by moving onto its tile.
  • Some rule sets allow winning if the opponent has no legal moves.
  • In tournament play, time rules may apply (future feature).

Tips & Tactics

  • Scout early: use low ranks to test the enemy formation.
  • Protect your Flag: surround it, but don’t make it obvious.
  • Set traps: bait with a mid piece, punish with a higher rank.
  • Track info: remember what ranks were revealed and removed.
  • Bluff: moving confidently can make weak pieces look strong.
